Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (AMU) is the largest art school in the Czech Republic. Thanks to its’ broad scope ranging from theatre, music, and dance to TV and movie production, AMU is considered a diverse and nurturing space for young artists to discover, master, and further develop any talents they might possess. Students seek to refine their specific abilities under the tuition of active professionals of the Czech cultural and intellectual scene, top-ranking filmmakers, theatre directors and stage performers, musical virtuosos, and master dancers with the emphasis on a uniquely individual approach.
AMU’s inherently international nature and openness foster the mutually enriching exchange of creative and educational experience and ideas and help to maintain and develop the portfolio of foreign language programs at AMU. We offer international students many bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs as well as short-term courses and stays. AMU is involved in many international professional networks and creative and research projects and is a member of many international professional associations. It cooperates with major art schools in Europe as part of shared projects.
Our goals include helping international students to integrate into life at AMU, building an open and friendly international environment, and consistently improving studying conditions for international students in our country.
The university is divided into 3 independent departments - each specialized in its own kind of artistic endeavor: Theatre Faculty (DAMU), Film and TV School (FAMU), Music and Dance Faculty (HAMU). Each department offers accredited study programs in English as well as short-term individual internships, exchange programs, specialized courses, and opportunities to study abroad.
- Theatre Faculty (DAMU) is a modern art school focused on the education of artistic personalities who are able to combine knowledge of theatrical procedures and styles with the courage to venture for creative experiments. DAMU offers studies in all fields of theatre production: acting, directing, dramaturgy, scenography, theory and criticism, theatre production, authorial work, and drama education, both in the field of dramatic theatre and in the field of devised and object theatre.
- Film and TV School (FAMU) is one of the leading film schools in Europe and the cradle of many of the most acclaimed Czech filmmakers. Its students’ films are recognized with dozens of awards at film festivals around the world every year. FAMU’s study programs combine both practical and theoretical approaches, thanks to which students acquire a comprehensive set of skills and knowledge needed to work in all professions of film, television, photography, and new media.
- Music and Dance Faculty (HAMU) explores the boundaries of musical and dance experience with a wide range of study programs. The campus is located in the heart of Prague’s historical center and spreads throughout several fascinating buildings including several music halls, an open-air stage, a club stage, a research facility, and a recording studio. Graduates perform successfully as soloists on prominent world stages and find employment not only as independent professionals but also in orchestras, theatres, and educational institutions around the world.
All three faculties are located in the heart of Prague’s historical center. Prague is home to a number of famous cultural attractions with great connections with the rest of Europe. In addition to this, the capital of the Czech Republic is one of the best student cities and has also been ranked high on the list of 100 safest cities in the world!
