Introduction
Federal University of Espírito Santo (Ufes) is a self-governing institution connected to the Ministry of Education (MEC), with curricular, scientific, administrative, financial, and asset-management autonomy. It operates under a belief in the indivisibility of teaching, research and outreach programs, with a vocation to work in all fields of knowledge.
Ufes was founded on May 5, 1954. It comprises four university campuses – Goiabeiras and Maruípe in the capital city of Vitória, and in the municipalities of Alegre (south of the state) and São Mateus (north of the state) – with an area of 4.3 million square meters. The total area of its campuses is 292,000 square meters (built area).
Ufes offers 103 undergraduate majors, with a total of 5,004 places per year. In the graduate field, it has 62 master's programs and 31 Ph.D. programs. It has 1,780 professors, 1,928 administrative staff, 20,467 undergraduate students, and 4,000 graduate students. Its administrative headquarters is located in Campus Goiabeiras, in Vitória.
In the field of scientific and technological research, Ufes has around 5,581 ongoing projects. In the field of outreach programs, it has developed 851 projects and programs, in all municipalities of the state of Espírito Santo, serving around 2 million people.
Ufes also offers facilities to the academic and wider communities, including its theater – the largest and most modern in our state – movie theater, art galleries, language center, libraries, planetarium, and astronomical observatory, auditoriums, sports center, and others.
It also provides services in the field of health, through the university hospital Cassiano Antonio Moraes (HUCAM) – the main public health facility in the state of Espírito Santo – offering various medical specialties, working as a reference in medium and high complexity medical care.
