Introduction
The FIU College of Engineering and Computing is South Florida’s leading engineering education resource. The college offers a complete range of fully accredited engineering bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs in cybersecurity, the internet of things, biomedical, civil and environmental, electrical and computer, and mechanical and materials engineering; construction management; and computing and information sciences. With close to $60M of external funding, research is integral to the college’s mission and success. Our mission is to explore and introduce new frontiers in engineering and computer science and reach preeminence in the classroom, laboratory, and industry:
- Classroom: Prepare students for future careers by offering degree programs that address our nation’s most urgent and emerging needs
- Laboratory: Explore and introduce new frontiers in engineering and computing, and foster innovation and interdisciplinary research that leads to entrepreneurial pursuits, primarily by providing engineering and computing solutions in grand challenge areas
- Industry: Partner with industry to support tech transfer and innovations, and enhance post-graduation opportunities for our students.
Points of Pride
FIU’s College of Engineering & Computing is committed to providing quality education, problem-solving research, and community engagement through local relevance, national visibility, and global exposure. As an educational leader in a changing economic, technological, and social environment, and as the research engine of the university, the college is proud of its growth and accomplishments in recent years. Our research expenditures have more than doubled from FY2012 to FY2021 ($17.4 million to $40 million), and the number of patents awarded to our faculty has increased almost 6 folds. Furthermore, our ASEE and NSF HERD rankings have seen significant improvements. We rank #1 in the continental U.S. in awarding bachelor’s degrees to Hispanic students, #11 in awarding bachelor’s degrees to African-Americans, and among the top 40 in the nation in awarding for the number of bachelor degrees awarded to women (source: ASEE 2020).
Admissions
With over 58,000 students and a first-year student acceptance rate of 50%, FIU admissions are considered selective. The admissions committee looks for applicants who are academically prepared, have challenged themselves with advanced courses, are active in their community, or are motivated by a specific goal or passion. We strive to prepare applicants for a college education to open doors to more future Panthers every year.
First Year Requirements
Test Scores
SAT, ACT, and/or CLT scores are required for first-time college applicants. They are one factor used in the admissions decision as outlined in the Florida Board of Governors regulation 6.002. For more information see First Year Pathways.
GPA
FIU recalculates GPA based on your courses taken. Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment, AICE, and Honors courses are all taken into consideration in your FIU weighted GPA. FIU-weighted GPA is used for Scholarships as well.
High School Courses
This is the high school course load required for applying first-year students. Taking courses beyond these minimum requirements can improve your chances of acceptance.
- 4 credits of English
- 4 credits of mathematics (at or above algebra I or higher)
- 3 credits of natural science (two must have included substantial lab requirements)
- 3 credits of social science (includes anthropology, history, civics, political science, economics, sociology, psychology and/or geography)
- 2 credits second language
- 2 credits in additional academic electives
Graduate Requirements
FIU admits over 6,000 graduate students every year. Admissions requirements vary by program. As a result, additional criteria may be used during the review process. Samples may include entrance exams, resumes or portfolios, essays, letters of recommendation, etc. Search for your program to verify what you will need.

Students who have earned a degree from a foreign non-English speaking country must take an English proficiency test.
English-Language Requirements for Graduate School Admission
Applicants from non-English speaking countries, including internationally educated American students, must demonstrate proficiency in English. Applicants who attended undergraduate institutions that do not teach in English must also meet this requirement, even if the institution is located within the United States. FIU only accepts official test scores or official documentation sent directly from the testing agency or organization to meet these requirements:
- TOEFL iBT/PBT: 80/550
- IELTS: 6.5
- Duolingo English Test: 110
- ENC 1101 and ENC 1102: B or better taken at an accredited institution in the U.S. or as previously articulated by Transfer and Transition Services (Coming Soon)
- FIU’s English Language Institute Level Six: Successful completion with passing grades for all content areas (*Individual FIU graduate programs must go through Faculty Senate approval to use this option. If approved, this option will be listed in the Graduate Course Catalog.)
- Applicants from accredited institutions or other English-speaking countries who hold an undergraduate or graduate degree.
