Non-universities offer programs in a wide variety of subjects such as fine arts, language, education and specialized fields such as military studies. Universities are characterized by research in addition to education, whereas non-universities focus on preparing students for a specific profession.
Since 2005, Italy has used the three-cycle degree system, awarding the equivalent of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. The master’s degree is named “Laurea Specialistica (LS).” More than 100 types of degree programs are available.
Admission to master’s programs requires a first cycle/bachelor’s degree and competency in Italian. Some programs, such as education and arts, also require entrance examinations. Since admission procedures vary, prosepctive students should review the requirements for each program.
