We are pleased that you have expressed interest in the Master of Latin American Studies. This document aims to provide you with comprehensive information regarding the study and qualification goals, as well as the distinctive features of the program.

The prerequisite is a first professional degree in one of the disciplines involved in LASt (ethnology, geography, history, political science, sociology, linguistics, literature, and media studies) or in a related discipline (e.g. cultural studies, communication studies, language, culture, translation, International relations with relevant specialist components from the disciplines involved in LASt, etc.) or a technically relevant connection to Latin America, for example, due to internships in the region, attended seminars, seminar papers, professional experience or theses.

If you do not have a degree certificate at the time of application, you can submit it by the end of the first master's semester. For information on the documents to be submitted in this case, see “Application documents to be submitted” below.

Proof of language skills in Portuguese or Spanish at the same level B1 (GERS)

Proof of language skills in English at level A2 (GERS).

All language certificates can be submitted later. However, they must be available by the time of enrollment at the latest. Proof can be provided by: the Abitur certificate (300 school hours of Spanish = B1), language certificates such as DELE (nivel initial), Diploma Supplements, and Transcripts of Records. The same applies to English skills

Recognition of certificates for degrees acquired abroad

For applicants who acquired their first degree abroad, the recognition of an educational qualification acquired abroad takes place as part of the application process at the Faculty of Humanities.

If your degree certificate was not issued in German, Spanish, Portuguese, or English, please enclose a translation of your degree in German by an officially sworn translator with your application documents.

If the number of applicants exceeds the number of available places for a Master's degree, a selection is required:

Interdisciplinarity I (10 CP): Lecture (lecture series LASt) = 2 LP

Interdisciplinarity II (6 CP): Course B = 4 credits

Last-M02 (mandatory module) 10 CP / 4 SWS

When studying abroad, study and examination achievements are required that correspond to 30 CP. The study and examination achievements are recognized as part of the master's program in Latin American Studies on the basis of a previously concluded learning agreement.

Oral examination (defense of the master's thesis) = 4 credits

Curriculum

Acquisition of scientific competence in interdisciplinarity.

Ability to comparatively deal with methods, content, and terminology of the disciplines involved in Latin American studies through training in a creative and networking approach to current issues. Development of a research project to create individual profiles.

Program Outcome

The semester contribution consists of the "actual" contribution of €290 (in accordance with the 'Beitragsordnung der Studierendenschaft der Universität Hamburg' in its current version). It is composed of the following components:

€15.00 in accordance with constitutional student body regulations

€184.80 for the semester public transport pass

€5.20 for the semester public transport pass hardship fund

€85.00 for the student union (in accordance with the fee regulations of the student union Hamburg) and an administrative fee of €50.
