Introduction

What is a French Graduate School (EUR)?

Based on the internationally recognized format of Graduate Schools, the French Ecoles Universitaires de Recherche (EUR) bring together both higher education institutions and research structures. They have a clear international component and benefit from strong ties with economic stakeholders.

The TESS Graduate School combines master's and doctoral programs from the University of Toulouse III Paul Sabatier as well as several high-caliber research laboratories. Supported by the French National Research Agency (ANR), TESS offers opportunities for a master-doctorate-employment continuum to the best foreign and local students alike.

What is TESS, specifically?

The Toulouse Graduate School of Earth and Space Science aims to train the next generation of scientists on the front line dealing with the monitoring and management of global change. It draws its strength from one of the largest concentrations of experts working in this field in Europe, a world-renowned talent hub.

The program emphasizes “learning by doing” through the use of innovative teaching methods. Incoming and outgoing mobility grants are available to encourage international partnerships and allow students to seek research internships abroad. Classes are presented in English to increase accessibility for foreign students.

Admissions

The TESS program is complementary to four Master's degrees from the Université Toulouse III Paul Sabatier:

  • Master's Degree in Ocean, Atmospheric and Climate Sciences (SOAC)
  • Master's Degree in Space Science and Technology (SUTS)
  • Master's Degree in Biodiversity, Ecology and Evolution (BEE)
  • Master's Degree in Earth and Planetary Sciences, Environment (STPE)

Students must therefore apply to the master's programme of their choice following the university’s registration process online via MonMaster. The deadline for this application is 24 March 2024.

Additionally to join to the TESS programme, students must apply here by no later than 24 June 2024.

Scholarships and Funding

The Toulouse Graduate School of Earth and Space Science offers two grants for master's students partcipating in the TESS programme.

Settling In Grant

The Settling In Grant aims to provide financial support to cover once-off relocation costs to students joining the TESS program from abroad or outside of the Académie de Toulouse.

Selection criteria: All students, regardless of nationality, registered for the first year of the TESS program are eligible to receive the Settling In Grant which is awarded as follows:

  • €1500 is granted to each student registered at an institution outside of France in the year before enrolling for TESS.
  • €800 is granted to each student registered at a French institution outside of the Académie de Toulouse in the year before enrolling for TESS.

Going Abroad Grant

The Going Abroad Grant aims to allow TESS master’s students to complete an internship abroad by contributing to travel costs.

The maximum funding available: €5 000 per student

Selection criteria:

  • Students must be registered in the first or second year of the TESS master’s program
  • Students may only receive the grant once during the TESS masters program, either during their first or second year of study
  • The bursary may be requested for the TESS Reinforced Internship or the master’s internship
  • Only internships taking place abroad are eligible
  • The amount of each bursary is determined by the steering committee and takes into account the location of the internship, duration of stay, etc.
